REACH Edmonton

With issues affecting immigrants and refugees making headlines over the past 18 months, REACH is focusing on these issues through a local lens at the 2017 Annual General Meeting and Showcase Celebration.

This year's theme is Diversity is our Strength: Stories of Challenge and Triumph. Judy Piercey and Ian Stewart of Pen and Lens Communications will present the keynote address, followed by a panel discussion about the immigrant and refugee experience in Edmonton. Panelists include Joseph Luri, Mohammad Ayyash and Arlene Morales.

REACH contracted Ian and Judy to document the stories of newcomers in Edmonton because capturing and sharing this journey is essential to building understanding and breaking down barriers in the larger Edmonton community.

Their presentation will introduce a newly-arrived Syrian family, sharing their story of settling in Edmonton, while also sharing the stories of REACH Immigrant and Refugee Initiative (RIRI) cultural navigators who have been in Canada for many years.

Through a series of images and stories, they will explore the challenges and barriers that newcomers face, while highlighting the incredible resilience of the people who overcome them in their new Canadian lives.

“It’s so much more than just learning English. The challenges they face are greater than Canadian-born people can imagine,” said Jan Fox, executive director of REACH Edmonton. “This is all about the immigrant journey. Migration enriches our country and our city. This is the Edmonton story.”

REACH Edmonton’s Annual General Meeting and Showcase Celebration takes place June 8, at Central Lions Seniors Recreation Centre (11113-113 St.) from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., with the showcase program beginning at 6 p.m.

This evening is an opportunity for Edmontonians to come together to explore how we can create a brighter future that is inclusive for all.
